Position Title: Chief of Police

The City of York, Nebraska (Population 8,000+) is seeking candidates for the position of Chief of Police.

The York Police Dept is comprised of 15 officers, 5 dispatchers and one support services officer, in addition to the Police Chief. Under administrative policy direction, performs responsible supervisory and administrative work, planning, organizing and directing all activities of the police department; makes administrative and operational decisions with an innovative management style engaging employees through teamwork and motivation. Qualified applicants should demonstrate above average interpersonal and communication skills, be a progressive, open-minded individual who will lead the department by example and reach out to staff and citizens alike by being accessible, engaged and visible. Work is performed in a standard office environment, and occasionally in the field, and other duties as staffing or scheduling circumstances demand.

Applicant must possess a valid driver’s license and meet certification standards established by the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center within one year (

Candidates must have a minimum of 10 years law enforcement experience with a minimum of 5 years command experience in a senior-level police management position; completion of the basic law enforcement training academy or equivalent.

Must pass various ancillary testing including, but not limited to, Civil Service, oral interviews, physical examination, psychological examination, drug screen and thorough background investigation. Must live within the city limits within 6 months of hiring.

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, business or public administration, or a related field. A combination of advanced education and experience that provided the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered in lieu of a Bachelor’s Degree.
