Position Title: Forensic Accountant and Consumer Protection Investigator

The Nebraska Department of Justice seeks a full-time forensic accountant and consumer protection investigator.


The position will conduct investigations of criminal financial fraud, consumer protection, antitrust and charitable matters. The investigations will require the candidate to:

  • Draft subpoenas, civil investigative demands, and routine correspondence to the public;

  • Review and analyze documents and other materials produced to, or obtained by, the Attorney General in the course of an investigation, including corporate records, financial statements, tax filings, and other confidential or proprietary materials;

  • Prepare investigative reports and affidavits which may be used in court;

  • Work and confer with other employees in the Consumer Protection Division and the Criminal Division, including Assistant Attorneys General;

  • Collaborate with state and federal law enforcement agencies in the investigation of related matters;

  • Gather, identify, preserve and prepare evidence for use in court, including physical evidence and witness statements;

  • Provide objective and credible testimony in state and federal court;

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding ongoing investigations and other matters not subject to public disclosure.

Qualifications / Requirements

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, criminal justice or a related field.

PREFERRED: Experience conducting financial audits. Holds or is in the process of obtaining certification as CFE, CPA, CIA, or CGFM. At least one year of experience as an investigator or examiner for a law enforcement agency, regulatory agency, accounting firm or financial institution.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Maintains and demonstrates a high level of professionalism and the ability to communicate effectively with others. Must be dependable, focused, detail-oriented and accurate in their work. Strong analytical abilities and writing skills required.

Candidates with knowledge of the following are preferred: forensic accounting, state consumer protection, anti-trust and/or charities statutes; methods and techniques for effectively conducting a law enforcement or regulatory investigation; evidentiary law and the rules of criminal and civil procedure.

Salary is $42,000 to $66,000 annually, commensurate with experience. Full-time state benefits available.
