Position Title: Police Chief

City of Hastings,, is seeking a visionary leader to be its next Police Chief. The Police Chief oversees and manages the activities of the Police and 911 Emergency Operations departments including ancillary functions such as Animal Control and code enforcement activities. This position directs the City’s 39 sworn positions, 13 full-time civilian, and 5 part-time civilian positions and manages a combined budget of $5.1 million.

This position is responsible for coordinating department activities with those of other departments and outside agencies and organizations; providing staff assistance to the City Administrator, Mayor and City Council; preparing and presenting reports and other necessary correspondence.

The Police Chief is responsible for overseeing the appointment and dismissal of all departmental personnel; developing subordinate personnel; handling grievances, and maintaining the conduct and general behavior of department personnel.

Salary range for this position is $76,215 – $106,928 in addition to an excellent benefit package.

Requirements include: Forward-thinking leadership concerning positioning the Police department both now and in the future. Thorough knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment. Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations. Knowledge of principles and practices of organization, administration, personnel management, budget preparation. Knowledge of principles and techniques of supervision, training and performance evaluation. Dedication to safe work practices.

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal
Justice, Law Enforcement, Public Administration, or a related field is
required. A master’s degree is a plus.

Seven years of municipal police work experience, four years of which must
have been equivalent to lieutenant or higher is required.

Certification as required from the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center.

Valid Driver’s License
