Position Title: Animal Control Officer

The Nebraska Humane Society is seeking a motivated, self-driven individual who loves animals and desires a career in law enforcement to join our team of dedicated Animal Control Officers. This is an excellent opportunity if you are looking to explore a career in law enforcement and want to begin building your experience with investigating offenses, educating citizens, issuing citations, testifying in court, and best of all, working with animals while doing so. The open position is on night shift, hours 3:30pm to Midnight, with Tuesdays and Wednesdays off. Some overnight emergency on-call shifts also required.


Full-time; 40 Hours/Week

Days Thursday - Monday; 3:30pm-Midnight

Principal Duties:

  • Captures, lifts, carries, and impounds stray and aggressive animals

  • Handles calls dealing with wildlife

  • Pick up unwanted, dead, injured, and rabies observation animals

  • Investigate complaints of animal bite cases

  • Handle rescue and distress calls

  • Make initial cruelty and neglect investigations

  • Educate the public on proper animal care and animal control ordinances

  • Make initial investigation dealing with Dangerous and Potentially Dangerous Dogs

  • Handle public nuisance calls

  • Issue citations

  • Write clear and concise reports

  • Appear in court to give testimony regarding violations, etc.

  • Maintains assigned equipment

  • Sells pet licenses

  • Perform any and all duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Field Supervisor

  • Must be able to drive a van

  • Represent the NHS in a professional, compassionate manner to the public

  • Perform all other tasks requested by the Field Director

Physical Requirements

  • Must have good vision

  • Must be able to lift 50-100 pounds

  • Must have use of all extremities

  • Must have good reflexes

  • Must be able to work with animals without allergic reactions

  • Must be able to handle all animals

  • Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in written form

  • Must be able to use a computer

Educational Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent

Experience, Abilities And Other Qualifications:

  • Must be comfortable and skilled working with a culturally diverse staff and community

  • Must be able to handle stressful situations when dealing with the public

  • Must have a good driving record and valid Nebraska driver’s license

  • Must have ability to handle animals properly

  • Must have a good knowledge of city streets

  • Must have ability to legibly complete written reports and issue criminal citations

  • Must be computer literate in Microsoft Office Pro or Office 2010

  • Maturity, good judgment, professional manner and personal appearance

  • Must be considerate and respectful of all employees, volunteers and customers

  • Must show compassion toward animals
