Position Title: Chief of Police
Category: Law Enforcement
The city of Bennington is looking for a full-time Chief of Police. This position requires supervision of all full-time, part-time and reserve officers. The Chief will report to the Mayor.

The following list of functions is not in order of importance but are considered essential to protect and serve the citizens of Bennington in a professional and effective manner:
• Oversee the operation and well being of the Police Department.
• Assure proper enforcement of federal, state and local laws and ordinances.
• Conduct all normal patrol procedures during the work shift (traffic stops, assist federal, state and county law enforcement as warranted or dispatched for calls of service).
• You must be able to perform physical tasks.
• Oversee scheduling, assignments, and supervision of the reporting officers, maintaining as close to a 24 hour schedule coverage as the budget and resources allow.
• Address all citizen concerns, inquiries and complaints.
• Make recommendations to the Mayor regarding personnel decisions regarding
the hiring, firing and discipline as well as outstanding merit and performance of officers as warranted.
• Prepare and submit the annual budget draft for the Police Department to the Mayor for presentation to the City Council, monitor all expenses throughout the year as compared to the annual budget.
• Oversee and advise on ongoing cases and investigations by the Bennington
Police Department and consult and cooperate with other law enforcement
agencies as warranted.
• Oversee and maintain all training requirements for the Bennington Police
Department in accordance with all regulations that apply.
• Coordinate efforts as warranted with the Bennington Rural Fire Department, as well as county, state and federal agencies for civil defense and disaster mitigation.
• Build and maintain good relationship with the local Bennington School District.
• Oversee prepare and submit with the assistance of the City Clerk, applications for grants. Prepare and submit monthly reports to the Mayor and City Council regarding the activities of the Police Department, as well as review and / or submit all investigative reports for the department.
• Consult with legal counsel as warranted.
• Attend all City Council and Department Head meetings, and any other city
meeting as requested by the Mayor.

Required Education, Training, License, Certifications and Experience:
• Bachelors degree from a 4-year accredited institution in Criminal Justice or related field
• Must be a current certified law enforcement officer in the State of Nebraska or be a current certified law enforcement officer in another state and be able to successfully complete the reciprocity process as required by the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center.
• Possess 5 years command experience at an accredited law enforcement
agency as a Chief, Captain, Lieutenant, or other command level position
• Must have completed executive level management training to include the
Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center Management Course or equivalent
program (i.e. FBINA, Northwestern Command College, SPI Administrative
Officer's Course, etc.)
• Must possess a valid driver’s license associated with your residence
• Must reside in, or move to a residence within 15 minutes of the reporting location upon starting the position of Police Chief within a reasonable time.

The City of Bennington is an EOE.
Salary: $50,000 - $85,000/year
